We are the #Skiwolves! Whether you've been skiing or snowboarding for years, or if you're a first timer who's been wanting to try, come join us for some awesome days on the mountain. We plan ski and snowboard trips for all abilities through the winter season, from December through April.

Once the snow melts, #Skiwolves keep going. Mountain biking, ziplining, hiking and more carry us through the warmer months, with other events though the year. Join our mailing list at bit.ly/skiwolves, and keep an eye out for events!

Since the first trip the club took in February 2015, hundreds of Stony Brook University students have joined us on a trip. As our rosters have grown and with increasing funding from the Undergraduate Student Government, our trips have become more and more affordable, allowing more Seawolves to become Skiwolves. What are you waiting for?

Most of our day trips are to the Catskill and Pocono Mountains to destinations like Belleayre, Hunter and Windham. We also take overnight trips to Vermont and northern New England over Spring Break and select weekends, and we head out west over Winter Break. For more info on where we go, head to this page. For more info on our executive board who plans and manages our trips and events, read on below.

2023-2024 E-Board

Michael Verdecanna // PRESIDENT

Michael is a third-year student studying Electrical Engineering. His father introduced him to skiing 8 years ago in the Pocono Mountains. Over the past 4 years, he has had 20+ day seasons and has traveled all throughout Eastern and Western America. This past Winter Michael spent over 40 days skiing and even skied this Summer in Chile. Michael enjoys time on the mountain and looks to share that experience with others. He can't wait to ski some powder with all of you this Winter!

As President, Michael will lead the team of E-Board members to successfully host events and trips while also growing the club. He is responsible for setting and monitoring the club's goals, running club meetings, and delegating tasks as necessary..

Kayla McKenna // vice president

Kayla is a fourth-year student majoring in English with a minor in Political Science. Kayla started snowboarding when she moved to Vermont to work for the Winter season. She immediately fell in love and tried to get out every day she had the chance. Along with snowboarding, Kayla also enjoys biking, hiking, and playing the guitar.

Kayla, the club's former president for two years, has now become the vice president as she concentrates on applying to law school. In her new position, she will team up with Michael to plan fun and affordable ski trips, making sure lots of members can hit the slopes.

Azhar Muhammad // treasurer

Azhar is a sophomore double majoring in Biomedical Engineering and French. Azhar was born in NYC but soon moved to Valencia, Spain, where he would spend the next 12 years of his life. In 2018, he came back to NYC and attended Forest Hills High School in Queens. At SBU, he spent his first semester trying as many new things as possible and quickly found his place at the Stony Brook Ski and Snowboard Club and attended as many trips as he could.

Azhar's parents introduced him to skiing when he was 5 years old at the mountain of Valdelinares in Spain. In the following years, they explored mountains in Andorra, Switzerland and Italy, where Azhar progressively became a solid skier. Once he became part of the club, he joined Michael and the rest in their mountain races and their off-piste endeavors. One of Azhar's favorite memories of the club is when he and his two friends Sam and Noah spent hours skiing down one specific slope at Sunday River Resort and finally broke the LIE speed limit of 55mph.

As treasurer, Azhar controls the club's money, its collection, and disbursement. He prepares the financial reports for our trips and keeps an account of all transactions.

John Tafe // SECRETARY

John is a senior studying Atmospheric and Political Science. His journey with skiing began at the age of three at Jiminy Peak in Massachusetts, where it became an annual family tradition. This early introduction to the slopes ignited a lifelong love for skiing, leading him to explore various ski destinations across the United States with the ski club.

He's actively involved in the meteorology club and also assists in managing his parents' vacation rental near Jiminy Peak. Despite his self-admitted "need for speed" on the slopes, which he jokes makes him a less-than-ideal teacher, John is passionate about sharing his love for skiing with friends and peers. He eagerly brings new enthusiasts to the slopes, ensuring they experience the same joy skiing has brought him throughout his life.

As secretary, John maintains all of the records, files, and details that are important for the smooth operation of the club. He also manages our Newsletter and works with the president to set the agenda.

Sara Medved // public relations

Sara Medved is a third-year international student-athlete from Spain double-majoring in Computer Science and Applied Math. Her dad, who was a ski instructor in Kirchberg, Austria, introduced her to skiing when she was about 5 years old. Skiing has always been a father-daughter thing for her. Now that she is studying on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean, she's happy to have found a new family to ski with: the SkiWolves.

As the PR Officer, Sara is responsible for the club's social media and web presence. She promotes upcoming trips and showcases past trips' highlights. She replies to emails and DMs, and maintains our trip calendar updated. She loves storytelling and photography and is currently working on improving the front end of this website, implementing a gallery section where everyone can share and download trip pictures.

Samantha Lankowicz // Graphic Designer

Sam is a fourth-year student studying Atmospheric Science and Geology. Sam has so much school spirit and loves to be involved on campus. When she’s not shredding the slopes, you can find Sam with the Spirit of Stony Brook Marching Band and the tennis club. As Graphic Designer, Sam plans to create exciting and informative fliers and posts to attract new members to the club and promote skiing and snowboarding!

Sam started skiing at a small mountain in Pennsylvania when she was 8 years old, and her favorite place to shred the slopes is Mont Tremblant, Canada and Winter Park in Colorado. Sam loves challenging runs, but also loves to help beginners share her excitement for the sport. This past season Sam also took up snowboarding and is loving it too! Her favorite memory with the Skiwolves is our annual trip to Windham’s Spring Fling to see if we’ll make it skimming across the pond! “Reigning Pond skim champion” Sam can’t wait to get the Skiwolves on the slopes and bring new Skiwolves on board!

Patrick Gibbs // Event Coordinator

Patrick is a fourth-year student at Stony Brook majoring in Biology Teacher Preparation with minors in Filmmaking and Film and Screen Studies. He transferred here from University of New Haven 3 years ago and has been with the SkiWolves and Environmental Club ever since. Besides skiing his hobbies include running, hiking, going to the beach, watching movies and reality competition shows (Big Brother, Survivor, The Challenge, and more)!

His family enrolled him and his twin sister in ski school at 2 years old, and they’ve been skiing every winter since then. Before the SkiWolves, he would rent a house and go skiing at Elk Mountain, Loon Mountain and Sunday River with not only his family but up to 4 other families! So, Patrick is no stranger to sharing a house with a bunch of people during ski trips. Since joining the SkiWolves he’s been able to explore more mountains, revisit some familiar mountains, and even escape the Northeast by heading out West to Utah with the club for the first time. He can’t wait to meet all of the new and returning members and feel free to ask him any questions about literally anything, but especially if a movie is good or bad because he won’t hold back.

As an Event Coordinator eboard member of the ski club, is responsible for meticulously planning and orchestrating a wide range of club activities and excursions, such as ski trips, social gatherings, and fundraising events.

Noah Perez // TRANSPORTATION COORDINATOR

Noah is a fourth-year student at stony brook, majoring in sustainability studies with a concentration in ecosystems and human impact. Noah learned how to snowboard in his final years of Boyscouts. Over the course of his trips to Mount Sunapee, Noah grew a passion for snowboarding and embracing the “full send” mentality!

Noah transferred from LIU Post his sophomore year of college; stony Brook has much more to offer when it comes to the environment. He soon found his home with the ski and snowboarding club. Noah has become a much more proficient snowboarder since joining the club, and continues to learn from his peers.

As transportation coordinator, Noah wants to provide all club members seamless transportation to and from all day trips, including overnight trips that require an overnight stay. Noah also takes care collecting gas receipts from drivers on our weekend trips to ensure all drivers are reimbursed.

Pola Urmanski // Fundraising Coordinator

Pola is a junior studying biomedical engineering on the pre-med track. If you're wondering about her other talents, just peek into a BMES meeting or the crochet club, where she might be crafting her latest masterpiece. This year, she's determined to fundraise with gusto so that the ski world can open up to more SBU students.

Growing up, Pola went skiing once a year but stopped for a long period during her teens. However, sophomore year brought her a game-changing Christmas gift: a pair of skis. With no room for excuses, she embraced the sport and soon became an avid member of the ski club. She says the club has allowed her to create lots of friendships and memories and greatly improved her skiing skills. And speaking about skiing skills, a big shoutout to our President, Michael. He's been Pola's go-to guide, even if his "helpful tips" occasionally lead to unexpected double black diamond adventures.

fLoyd // Club Mascot

Floyd is 7, 50 pounds, and really likes his toy football. Hes a really good boy and likes the snow. While he currently resides with Kayla, several club members can't resist his charms and are constantly vying for his attention, making him the most sought-after club member of all!

Past E-Board

Huge amounts of gratitude go out to our past e-board, who helped shape the club as it is today. Many of our past e-board have put countless hours and effort into planning trips, events and more. We wouldn't be where we are today, in terms of the number of trips we offer, the ambition behind the events we plan, or the number of members we have, if it wasn't for the awesome e-board who've been with us from Day 1.
